With the arrival of The Avengers so imminent, it seems the perfect time to start announcing the cast for the next movie in the Marvel superhero canon. Iron Man 3 is set to be released around this time next year, with filming due to start after The Avengers premiere. Filming will take place in North Carolina (where I live, which is very cool) and China. Rumors are that the script will be based on the popular Extremis series by Warren Ellis. The story involves nanotechnology, which Tony Stark uses to improve his Iron Man suit, and the scientists who create it as a virus. Apparently the nanobots can attach to humans and wreak all kinds of havoc. I don’t know all the details (I suppose I would have to read the source material for that) but it sounds like a cool premise.
According to Marvel’s Kevin Feige (via Collider), “Iron Man 3 is very much inspired by the first half of Iron Man 1. We’re not going back to the cave, but he’s stripped of everything, he’s backed up against a wall, and he’s gotta use his intelligence to get out of it. He can’t call Thor, he can’t call Cap, he can’t call Nick Fury, and he can’t look for the Helicarrier in the sky.” I suppose that means that Tony Stark isn’t going to make any new friends in The Avengers. But he definitely won’t be completely alone with all the big names piling up to join the cast.
First up is Sir Ben Kingsley, who has been in a lot of different things including Schindler’s List, Lucky Number Slevin, The Love Guru, Shutter Island, and Hugo to name a few. He’s set to play an as-yet-unnamed villain who helps terrorists to spread the nanotechnology virus. I’m sure more details about his role will be released as time moves on.
With a sure summer blockbuster under his belt in the form of Prometheus, Guy Pearce is already having a good year. But now he’s set to play geneticist Aldritch Killian, who has a hand in creating the nanobot virus called Extremis. His partner in crime is Maya Hanson, a role which has been offered to Jessica Chastain from The Help. According to the story, after the government pulls funding on their Extremis project the two scientist have to resort to illegal methods to spread their genius.
Seeing that some of the production will be in China, it seems fitting that there should be some big name international actors in the cast as well. Andy Lau (from House of Flying Daggers) is currently in talks to join a team of good scientists fighting against the spread of the virus. There’s no definite word that he’s apart of the cast officially, but with production due to start soon he seems at the top of the list.
Returning cast members include Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and Don Chedle as James Rhodes. But unfortunately Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow aka Natasha Romanoff will not be appearing in Iron Man 3. With the awesome clip circling the internet featuring Black Widow beating the crap out of a bunch of guys all while tied to a chair, I’m sincerely hoping she gets some more screen time in another movie. With all the exciting names in the film, even without ScarJo, it’s sure to be an exciting ride. Tony Stark never dissapoints.
What do you guys think of the new members of Iron Man 3? Are they talented enough to withstand Tony Stark’s ego?
