Les Mis: Amanda Seyfried Offered Cosette; Taylor Swift Offered Eponine | Reel Movie Nation

This bit of news certainly has me taken aback. Over the past couple of months we’ve been reporting news surrounding Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of the hit broadway musical, Les Miserables. While most of the news has only strengthened my faith in the this film, part of this announcement has me scratching my head wanting to smack Hooper around a couple of times. It’s official, Hooper has offered the role of Cosette to Amanda Seyfried and the role of Eponine to the country singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift. WTF?!

The news, released last night, came from two different exclusive scoops, according to Twitchfilm. The film already has an amazing award-winning cast, which includes Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (Javert), Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Helena Bonham Carter (Madame Thénardiers), Sacha Baron Cohen (Monsieur Thénardiers), Aaron Tveit (Enjolras) and Eddie Redmayne (Marius). I’m sorry, but when you through in Taylor Swift’s name, it spoils the bunch.

With a cast this talented and a December release date, there’s no doubt that Hooper wants several golden statues sitting on his shelf. The King’s Speech helmer announced last week that he intends on having the entire cast sing live on camera instead of recording the music in the studio and then having the actors lip-sync during filming. I have a feeling most of the cast will need to buy a pair of earplugs IF Taylor Swift takes the role.

Amanda Seyfried’s Involvement

I’m not at all shocked by the offer to Seyfried, who’s been trained in opera. Sure, Seyfried’s had some questionable moments in her career — her involvement in Red Riding Hood, Dear John and Jennifer’s Body — but we’ll forgive her for those. What’s ironic is the fact that Seyfried’s been offered Cosette, who’s the daughter of Anne Hathaway’s character, Fantine the prostitute. But wait, isn’t Seyfried only three years younger than Hathaway? Yep, you curious observer, you. Fantine gives her daughter up to the rich Thénardiers (Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen), however, the two abuse her, and she’s saved by Valjean.

Taylor Swift’s Involvement

Swift’s character, Eponine, is a rich girl turned poor. Both Cosette and Eponine are involved in a love triangle with Marius Pontmercy, played by Eddie Redmayne. Swift was up against Scarlett Johansson, Lea Michele and Evan Rachel Wood, all three, whom I sure  could have outperformed Swift. This news has people thinking, no doubt, about Swift’s past singing and acting travesties — her awful acting performance in Valentine’s Day, and her wretched performance on the Grammy stage a couple of years, and country is supposed to be her forte…

How do you guys feel about Hooper offering Cosette to Amanda Seyfried and Eponine to Taylor Swift?

Directed by Tom Hooper, Les Miserables hits theaters December 7, 2012.
