Dane DeHaan Joins ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ as Harry Osborn

When you’ve starred in your first superhero film, the gates to the world of Marvel and DC films open wide. Take a look at the careers of Halle Berry (Storm, Cat Woman), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Green Lantern, Paper Man), and Chris Evans (Captain America, The Human Torch). It’s even better when your first superhero film belongs to another company other than Marvel, DC and Dark Horse Comics.

From ‘Chronicle’ to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′

Dane DeHaan, where have you seen his name? If you had a chance to see Lincoln this season, you’ve seen him as “The Second White Soldier” according to his IMDB profile. Ok, so you probably missed him in that one, but his big debut came in the form of the found footage superhero film, Chronicle. His performance as the film’s antagonist, Andrew Detmer, while broody, was impressive, especially for his first major feature film. Earlier this year he made an appearance in Lawless alongside Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain and Shia LaBeouf.

The news came from the man himself, director Marc Webb as he took to his Twitter account to make the announcement. I’m a huge fan of Twitter, especially when the actors, directors and all involved Tweet photos and news from the set. He tweeted: “Meet Harry Osborn”, and attached a photo. Yes, it’s short, but sweet. Way to use all 140 characters, Webb.

Stiff Competition for Harry Osborn

Exactly who was DeHaan up against for the role? Some of your hearts will ache when you hear these names: Sam Claflin (Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn, Les Miserables), Brady Corbet (Melancholia), Boyd Holbrook (Milk), and Douglas Booth (LOL, Noah). Sam Raimi cast James Franco as Harry, the son of The Green Goblin, in his Spider-Man Trilogy. While there are hardly any similarities between the two, they both seem to have the mysterious, emo persona nailed down.

I’m not sure if the fan boys approve, but plenty of girls who love their skinny high school boys will be pleased. DeHaan is actually age 27, but what does that matter when Andrew Garfield is age 29 heading for 30. It’s crazy to think about the fact that these guys are playing 17-18 year olds, but in Hollywood it pays to have a younger look.

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jammie Foxx, Shailene Woodley and Dane Dehaan. This film swings into theaters May 2nd, 2014.
