I’m sure everyone, well everyone like me, has been eagerly awaiting the two new Snow White films that are currently in production. I’m a big fan of fairy tales and fantasy, so these movies are right up my alley. The two stories are definitely competing to be first and best at the darker version of the classic tale. We won’t know the true winner until summer 2012, but until then we can shamelessly critique each of them as more and more footage is released to stir up interest.
First up will be Mirror Mirror from director Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell), which premieres March 16, 2012. It will star Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Armie Hammer as the Prince, Sean Bean as the King, and Lilly Collins as Snow White. The pictures look promising (see below), and I’m a big fan of Armie Hammer (the prince) ever since The Social Network. And who doesn’t love Sean Bean? The one person I really don’t like is Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. She doesn’t look at all evil, instead looking like Pretty Woman in a big dress. I can’t even think of a role where Julia Roberts has ever been mean to anyone. I’m a little worried that she won’t be able to frighten the kiddies. But being that she’s an amazing Oscar winning actress, I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
The first fairy tale to release a trailer, however, was the summer 2012 version of Snow White and the Huntsman. I have to admit that the trailer looks pretty cool. Instead of whimsical and pretty it looks dark and brooding, due mostly to Charlize Theron’s amazing Evil Queen. She just looks completely psycho as she sucks the soul out of some girl and calls forth a weird demon mirror. I’m also in love with Chris Hemsworth ever since this summer’s Thor. A hottie with a body, he’s proven that he’s a great action star.
Here’s the trailer so you can check it out for yourself:
My problem of course lies with little Mrs. Edward Cullen herself, Kristen Stewart. I suppose that my opinion of her carries a little bias what with completely hating everything Twilight. But it seems like every movie she’s in, she sucks all the good acting out of it. It pains me to admit this - but when the Twilight saga first came out I read them, along with everyone else, in an almost obsessive way. While the comparisons to Harry Potter always made me angry (let’s face it folks, Twilight is a big pile of crap compared with what J.K. Rowling created), I let them slide because I didn’t really mind the series. This all changed when the movies came out. I watched the first Twilight movie midnight showing and have never felt the same way about the franchise since. It suddenly made clear how completely absurd the entire story was. A girl who is completely dependent on some sparkly, misogynistic, pansy vampire so much so that she literally can’t function without him? Stupid.
Don’t believe me? Watch this scene again. You can’t tell me that this is good acting.
So watching this trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman had me rolling my eyes at every scene where Kristen Stewart runs around like a damsel in distress. I thought with all those pictures of her in armor that maybe we’d see someone that wasn’t identical to Bella Swann. Because we’ve already seen that girl. And she sucks.
What do you guys think about the new trailer? Any Twilight haters that agree with me? Any Twilight lovers that think I’m insane? Feel free to argue with me in the comments.
