Bringing on board comic book enthusiast and creator Mark Millar as creative consultant for Fox’s Marvel properties (X-men & Fantastic Four) may have been the production company’s best decision yet!
Known for his incredible work with the creation of several comic books including Kick-Ass and Wanted, which both spawned two films, Millar sat down with SFX magazine and had several excited words about the sequel to X-men: First Class, X-men: Days of Future Past.
Let it be known, Millar’s never been one to keep his mouth shut about anything and that may be a great thing, even if Fox thinks otherwise. First, he gave hints to Fantastic Four and X-men crossing paths in the near future, and now he’s giving fans a taste of what’s to come in Days of Future Past.
“Vaughn is going for a big sci-fi style thing with X-Men: Days of Future Past,”
“Big sci-fi style thing…” sounds fantastic!
Millar described Days of Future Past as, “X-Men meets The Terminator.” This shouldn’t be a shock to any X-fans out there as the title hints towards one of the best story lines to be created in X-men history. In short, it takes all the themes from the characters’ world — hate, discrimination, camaraderie, fear — and magnifies it to a level beyond comprehension.
Singer, Vaughn, & Millar Team Up!
In the comic “Days of Future Past,” the X-men from the future meet themselves in the past to provide a warning of what’s to come — a world where sentinels, huge robots cooked up by the government, capture and enslave mutants. This hints towards a film that would combine the X-men: First Class cast with the cast of X-men 1 – 3. To those doubters, let’s not forget that Famke Janssen was recently approached about the return of Jean Grey and she said, “(I’m) in no position to say anything. I have no idea, stay tuned.”
Millar also went on to say:
“You’ve got robots, you’ve got time travel, you’ve got superheroes – it’s got everything in one film… Cost-wise it’s going to go up, and ambitious-wise it’s gone up. But Vaughn can handle it. Vaughn made Kick-Ass for $28 million.”
To imagine what Matthew Vaughn can do with a larger film budget excites me. Don’t expect the man to waste one penny on frivolousness. Give Vaughn half the budget that Disney gave to director Andrew Stanton for John Carter, which would be $125 million, and he could’ve made a film five times better than that sci-fi mess.
So what can we hope to expect?
For one, I’m ready to see some team action, which it will take to defeat just one sentinel. Team effort is an area where Fantastic Four excelled and the X-men 1-3 did not, although we did see some of it in Brett Ratner’s X-men: Last Stand. In Bryan Singer’s X-men and X-2: United there was a lot of one-on-one combat — Mystique Vs. Wolverine, Storm Vs Toad, Wolverine Vs. Lady Deathstrike, Jean Vs. Toad, etc. The dynamic change when the team utilize each other’s strengths as we saw in the Danger Room scene in Last Stand, which included a sentinel for practice purposes, though be it one very disappointing and sorry ass sentinel.
