An All-Star Cast with a Fun Plot
Directed by Irish playwright, filmmaker, and screenwriter Martin McDonagh comes a new black comedy with a superstar cast, Seven Psychopaths. Colin Farrell plays Marty, a struggling writer trying to finish his own screenplay entitled ‘Seven Psychopaths’. Luckily he has best friend Billy (Sam Rockwell) by his side, ready to do whatever it takes to help Marty get back on his feet. But Billy’s companionship comes with a few conditions.
Billy is a dog thief, or as he calls himself a dog “borrower”, stealing people’s pooches and returning them for a fee. His partner in crime is Hans (Christopher Walken) and when the two have stolen the wrong shih tzu, from violent gangster Charlie (Woody Harrelson), all hell breaks lose. Fortunately for Marty this may be just the inspiration his writing needs, as long as he can stay alive to write it.
Filming and Cinematography
Seven Psychopaths was filmed in just under seven months, and with the amount of action and weapons that appear in the trailer it’ll be interesting to see just how much post-production work was put in. The whole film was made less than a year after the original casting was announced in May of 2011.
In addition to the all-star cast of fan favorites, I’m excited that Seven Psychopaths features cinematographer Ben Davis. Davis has worked on several other films including Hannibal Rising, Kick-Ass, The Rite, and The Wrath of the Titans. It seems he has a pretty balanced exposure of zany action, suspense, and CGI which would make him a great choice for this wacky film.
What To Look Forward To
One of the most creative films that’s come out in a while, Seven Psychopaths is opting for an original story line that is not based off a novel. When over half the movies coming out today are remakes, adapted novels, or sequels it can be hard to get inspired by the theater. Luckily, there are still some bold film makers out there who want to take a shot, and Martin McDonagh is no exception. I can’t wait to see how the writer, producer, and director of the film puts together a new take on gangster movies, adding in the pull of heart strings for dog lovers.
Seven Psychopaths hits theaters October 12th, 2012.
