From the Pages to the Screen

Capturing the essence of the 1920s, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire come together in a film I’ve been waiting a long time for. Baz Luhrmann, the brilliant mind behind the Red Curtain Series, which included Moulin Rouge, Romeo & Juliet, and Strictly Ballroom, has brought another classic story to life, and in style. Taken from the pages of F. Scott Fitzgerald, this book-turned-film has been long anticipated by fans of literature, and everyone’s fingers will be crossed to see how it accomplishes this great task. If this trailer is a true taste of the film, it is not going to disappoint.

Blending the Old with the New

Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) is a man of mystery always in “cool, beautiful suits,” he has captured the attention of his new neighbor Nick Carraway (Maguire). As Carraway gets closer to this illusive man he realizes all things are not as they seem. With a soundtrack by Jay Z and Kanye West this old classic will certainly have a new flavor, which will be very interesting to experience. As one of the top comments on the trailer on youtube says, “Nothing says 1920 Long Island like Kanye and Jay.”

Catherine Martin – Costumer & Producer

Catherine Martin, who also worked with Luhrmann on Moulin Rouge, not only designed the beautiful costumes seen in the trailer, but also helped produce the film. Her work with Baz before truly captured the essence of such a historic era. I can’t wait to see how she manages with the roaring 20s! For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of reading The Great Gatsby, I urge you to do so before seeing the film. It really adds to the experience of getting into the movie, and getting to know the characters.

I trust this will be a huge box office success, coming out on Christmas this year. Perfect timing for a movie that is going to be so full of lavish parties and over the top costumes that the 20s are best known for.
