If you thought Iron Man/Tony Stark was going to be the frontman of Joss Whedon’s Avengers, think again. While the trailers feature Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) hogging precious screen time and having some of the best lines, don’t be fooled, Captain America is still head of this ship. So what do you do when you’ve got a loud, cocky, “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” on your team such as, Tony Stark? You let the real leader tell the story.
This bit of news is a breath of fresh air and adds an entirely new look to ‘The Avengers‘. Director Joss Whedon sat down with Entertainment Weekly and talked about Captain America and the team:
“I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.”
It all makes sense and has even strengthened my trust in Whedon’s directing skills. If you think about it all of the characters, except for Steve Rogers/Captain America, have been living in the world with their superpowers for quite sometime. The only person whose world has changed is Captain America due to the shift of eras.
This news brings a huge smile to my face. I would’ve despised this movie if Tony Stark stole the spotlight from Steve Rogers, and no doubt he’ll try. I just can’t wait to see him put Iron Man in his place. Hopefully they’ll have a little tussle before the real action begins.
Along with the news came a brand new photo of Captain America in uniform. The picture gives us a pretty good look at the costume, which appears to be more detailed than many first thought.
Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers stars Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, and Samuel L. Jackson. This film slams into theaters on May 4, 2012.
