James Marsden Talks About Returning As Cyclops in X-men 4
A couple of days ago Lauren Donner, producer of all X-men films to date, announced that X-men 4 and X-men 5 were on F0x’s schedule. She also announced that she’d love to have the whole cast from the previous X-films together again. Ever since then X-fans have been blowing up message boards, forums, and search engines for any further news from the cast members.
Movieline caught up with James Marsden and asked him several questions regarding his acting career, Hop, and most importantly if he’d be up for returning to the X-world as Cyclops. As many of you know Cyclops sort of vanished in X-men 3: The Last Stand, therefore, with a great explanation Cyclops could return. Here’s the interview:
This week we heard whispers that even more X-Men films are in the works. Do you hope to return to the franchise?
Yeah, I would love to! Honestly, people ask me more about that than anything and it’s almost embarrassing how little I know about what’s going on with X-Men: First Class. But I guess it’s obviously a prequel and it takes place before our movies, so I’m excited to see it, and I’m excited they’re making it. I think they’re smart, they know they can make X-Men movies as long as they want. There are plenty of characters and plenty of backstories, so I’m happy that they’re continuing the mythology. And I’m happy to have been a part of it at some point. But it would be great to get Hugh [Jackman] and Famke [Janssen] and Patrick [Stewart] and Ian [McKellan] and Halle [Berry] and everybody back together again to do another installment, our next chapter.Did you share certain feelings about how Cylops went out in X-Men: The Last Stand, or were you satisfied with his ending?
[Laughs] Well, the thing is I appreciate all the fans that have said that he didn’t get his due, or whatever. But for me it’s very difficult to look back on that experience with any sort of disappointment or regret. I feel really lucky to have been in those movies and feel very proud of what I do in those movies; it’s difficult when you have however many — 12, 15 — new characters that you’re trying to introduce to an audience in 90 to 120 minutes, to give everyone their due. That’s one of the reasons you’re seeing so many spin-offs, because every character could have a spin-off. You could have a Cyclops spin-off, you could have a Jean Grey spin-off — there’s an enormous wealth of backstory and character that you could make a franchise out of each of these characters. So in our X-Men they were always written from Wolverine’s standpoint. He was the lead protagonist. But that could have easily been Storm’s, or Beast’s — it just so happens that the ones I was a part of were very much focused on Wolverine, who was a very popular character in the comics. But I think there’s a lot more story to Cyclops, there’s a lot more depth that exists in the comics. But again, I’m also really realistic about the challenge of introducing and bringing all that depth to however many characters there are within the average running time of a movie.
This is exciting news. First of all Marsden deserves more screen time as Cyclops. His character was screwed over big time in the first three X-films. I think that Marsden had the right take on Cyclops as far as how he portrayed the character, the director and the writer just needed to give him more to do. I’m sure Halle Berry would return as Storm, as she’s been pushing for and X-men 4 since 2006. And we all know that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine.
What do you guys think about Marsden returning as Cyclops? Do you think the studio could come up with a story line that makes sense for his return?

News: ‘X-Men 4′, ‘X-men 5′, and ‘Deadpool’ Are Currently in Development
The mother, as far as producing X-men films, Lauren Donner announced yesterday that X-men 4, X-men 5, and Deadpool are all in current development. Donner has produced every X-men film to date, including X-men: First Class. What she says about the X-men and their future in Hollywood is basically gold. Donner is not finished with the X-men just yet people. Nor is she concerned about rebooting the franchise from the very beginning. Why do that when you have X-men: First Class, which could very well be turned into a trilogy in itself.
Yesterday she talked to the press about the upcoming sequel to X-men Origins: Wolverine, titled The Wolverine, which only several weeks ago lost Darren Aronofsky as director because of location. She also talked about the Deadpool film, X-men 4 and X-men 5. And yes, they will continue where X-men 3: The Last Stand ended.
First on The Wolverine: I’ve said it and I’ll say it again, it’s a shame this movie lost Aronofsky as director. I believe he really has the talent to bring Wolverine to new psychological levels, in terms of his past and what ever knew love interest is involved in the sequel. Yes, X-men Origins: Wolverine may not have been the best of the X-films to date but it had it’s good moments. I’m hoping Donner brings in someone to clean up that CGI as well. The bathroom scene anyone? Here’s what Donner had to say about The Wolverine:
“It will have depth and a dramatic backbone,” she said. “And yet there’s more action in this one than in any one we’ve ever done. It’s such a good script. We have the great Christopher McQuarrie writing and it’s very true to the Japanese saga. This is Logan on his own…”
As far as Deadpool goes, he was ripped to shreds, dissected, ripped to shreds again… I think you get my point. His character in X-men Origins: Wolverine was just basically an experiment. I don’t even consider that character Deadpool in my mind. Donner seems to have the same mindset about how he was handled in Wolverine:
“It’s a total reboot… We’re either going to pretend that didn’t happen or mock it, which he could. It’s insane, it’s definitely comedy, but it’s an R script, it’s really irreverent and violent. Right away, we’re out of the X-Men world”.
Here’s what she had to say about Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, and his commitment to the film:
“He’s very involved, Ryan. He’s working with the writers on the screenplay and it is as much as it is ours.”
And Donner also confirmed that this would be the Deadpool of the comics, and not the mute mutant we saw in last time around, right down to Deadpool’s scarred face. “I’m tellin’ ya, it’s true to the comic,” she laughed. “You’ll see all of them. You’ll see Wade Wilson, the good-looking Ryan Reynolds! You’ll see Deadpool in his costume and you’ll see the cancer-scarred face.”
Now, out of all this amazing news released by Donner the exciting part of it all is her revealing that X-men 4 and X-men 5 are currently in active development. There’s nothing sweeter to my ears.
“We took the treatment to Fox and they love it… And X4 leads into X5″
There’s also reports that these films may very well reunite the entire cast from the first three X-men films. If this is true I’ll be a happy camper. I know that Halle Berry has always been interested in returning as Storm, and Hugh Jackman is still playing Wolverine in the next sequel so why wouldn’t he return? As far as Cyclops, Jean, and Professor X, lets hope they don’t come up with some cheesy storyline to bring them all back to life at the same time. I could see Cyclops returning because his death remained a mystery, but Jean should probably stay buried until that 5th movie. Hopefully these movies will get rolling very soon because no one’s getting any younger, plus as time goes on people’s schedules get busier and busier. Props to Donner for not rebooting the whole franchise. The X-men have way too many characters that have yet to be explored; the characters that have been introduced, Rogue, Storm, Cyclops, Colossus, etc., have yet to be fully explored.
What do you guys think about all of this X-news? Are their any characters you’d like to see get more screen time or be introduced to the X-films?
