Helena Bonham Carter is Miss Havisham in ‘Great Expectations’
Does anyone remember the book titled Great Expectations? Well someone thought it would be a great idea to turn the book into a film, and depending how the story is told, I’m sure it could very well be a success. By the way this isn’t the first film adaptation of the book to go into production. Gweneth Paltrow starred in the 1998 modernized version of the classic story. There was also another version released in 1946 which was directed by David Lean.
BBC announced that Helena Bonham Carter will star in the adaption of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations–the same novel middle school teachers tortured little kids with in English class. The film will be directed by Mike Newell. Bonham Carter is reported to play Miss Havisham. The only other actor attached to the film is Jeremy Irvine, who will play the main character, Pip. Irvine is also set to star in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. Busy schedule ahead for Mr. Irvine.
I’m sorry, but I had a really bad experience reading Great Expectations in middle school, probably due to the fact that it was the longest book I’d ever read at that age. Once I re-read it, I’m sure I’ll grow to love the book I once hated. I’m wondering if they’re going to split the book into several films or try to cram everything into one film. If you think about it the book is at least 600 pages, and Great Expectations has a lot of fans.
Do you think a Great Expectations film is a good idea? Why or why not?
