Confirmed: Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins ‘Rock of Ages’
Rock of Ages loses one star only to gain another. Director Adam Shankman—judge and choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance, director of Step Up and Hairspray—just added Academy Award winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago) to the list of an already packed and talented cast for the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Rock of Ages.
Apparently, Shankman is taking some liberty with the original Broadway script by casting Jones as a female villain. For now the name of the character is unknown, but Shankman talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the new character:
The Hollywood Reporter
“It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month,” said Shankman. “The character was invented to streamline the stories.”
Shankman described the character as “if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child. She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles.”
Catherine Zeta-Jones will join Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, and Julianne Hough. Unfortunately, Rock of Ages lost Amy Adams due to her being cast in Zack Snyder’s Superman: The Man of Steel. Adams stated that she wants to put all of her attention into Lois Lane.
Directed by Adam Shankman, Rock of Ages hits theaters everywhere June 1, 2012.
How do you guys think the cast is shaping up?

‘Rock of Ages’ Adds Russell Brand and Diego Boneta to the Cast List
The producers of the musical adaption Rock of Ages have just added Russell Brand and Diego Boneta to the cast list. The cast for this film already includes some very interesting names: Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige, Amy Adams, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, and Julianne Hough. Add in Russell Brand and Diego Boneta and you’ve got yourself a power house cast. But does jamming in a bunch of “A” list actors and platinum recording artist always mean success? Remember that awful movie Valentine’s Day?
Russell Brand had an amazing start for 2011. Last month two of his films hit theaters: Hop, and Arthur. Though Arthur opened to some mixed reviews, the jellybean pooping bunny could be Russell Brand’s most successful film to date. Looking at Hop’s opening weekend at the box office, the film could knock Rango from the number one spot. Let’s not also forget that playing a rocker isn’t foreign to Russell as he’s played the role before in his hit comedy, Get Him to the Greek, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. My question is where the heck did Russell Brand come from? He hosted the 2009 MTV Music Awards, and since then everyone’s been wanting a piece of him. More power to you Brand.
Now let’s talk about Diego Boneta. If you don’t know who he is then you should get to know him really fast, as I’m sure this film could very well launch his music and acting career here in the US. Boneta has been seen on the reboot of 90120 and the television drama Pretty Little Liars. Here’s what director Adam Shankman—judge and choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance, director of Step Up and Hairspray—had to say about casting Boneta:
“He walked in and absolutely fit the part like Zac Efron in Hairspray, and Channing Tatum in Step Up,”
What do you guys think about those cast for the film so far?
