‘Skyfall’: Daniel Craig’s James Bond Goes Classic in New Poster

The next installment in the James Bond film franchise, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, will aim to fuse the old with the new. Daniel Craig‘s first performance as the suave and dangerous James Bond in Casino Royal gave Bond a new and contemporary feel, all the same, Quantum Solace pushed the envelope even further. This time Sam Mendes takes a seat in the director’s chair — the third to do so since Craig stepped into the suit — with plans to take the style back to the golden age of Mr. Bond.

Taking Bond Back to Classic Gun Barrel

The official 007 blog released the first teaser poster for Skyfall, which features Craig motionless in what appears at first glance to be the barrel of a gun, paying tribute to the Bond films of the past. But on closer evaluation, the “barrel” also gives hint to an underground drainage tunnel. Also notice that Bond isn’t pointing his gun, instead he’s front and center, as if he’s the bullet in mid fire. The black and white composition gives the poster a very clean and stylistic look.

This is the first time Craig’s Bond has used the iconic gun and barrel imagery. In an early interview, Mendes revealed that Skyfall “had all the elements of a classic Bond movie”, taking the spy to London, Turkey, Scotland and China. Usually I’m not a fan of franchises that switch out directors like and old candy dispenser, but I must admit, it works with the Bond films. I wasn’t at all disappointed with Quantum Solace or Casino Royale. And I think Skyfall will reel the franchise back to its original roots, while also giving us something fresh — an combination well displayed in this first teaser poster.

Directed by Sam Mendes, Skyfall stars Daniel Craig, Judy Dench, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Helen McCrory and Ben Whishaw. This film hits theaters November 9th, 2012.
