‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ Soundtrack Review

There are many elements that make Scott Pilgrim vs. the World a brilliant film. From the surreal world of video games and comic books juxtaposed with the mundane of reality to the transcending soundtrack illuminating to life through the screen, this film is definitely one that needs to be added to the home collection. Personally, I became fascinated with this film, instantly falling in love with it as the opening scene rolled.

One element that makes this movie so awesome is the thriving music that consistently arrests the story line. As a main feature to the film, the music frequently comes to life in a vibrant display of digital graphics for the viewer to awe over. The album created for this film is purely fantastic. Made up of nineteen tracks, the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World soundtrack is compiled of the film’s feature band, The Sex Bob-Oms, other bands shown in the film, like Crash and the Boys, and a great collaboration of musicians from America’s iconic music scene, such as The Rolling Stones and Metric and Beck.

Metric and Beck

The film’s original score, excluding a small handful of songs, was written and created by Radiohead’s producer Nigel Godrich. Many songs featured on the soundtrack were performed in the actual scenes, giving the album a genuine feel. One of my favorite bands, Metric, is heavily used as the main inspiration for the film’s fictional band, The Clash at Demonhead. Contributing to the musical theme with their song “Black Sheep,” the lead singer for Metric, Emily Haines, influenced the clothing choices of The Clash at Demonhead’s lead singer Envy Adams.

One of the decisions that I found to be awesome was the creative usage of the film’s feature band Sex Bob-Oms. In the opening credits the band’s musical talents are displayed infront of millions. In a refreshing manner, the actors playing the characters actually sing for both the tracks in the film and on the soundtrack. The band’s lead singer, Stephen Stills, played by Mark Webber (Snow Day, Save the Date), keeps it raw and down-n-dirty with his lead vocals, while the other band members, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) and Kim Pine (Allison Pill), sing backup. Interestingly enough, the trio does a grand job performing the songs written by Beck.
