Sam Claflin Lands Finnick Odair in ‘Catching Fire’!

The Search for Finnick Odair is Over!

After weeks of auditions and speculations, Lionsgate Entertainment has finally found their Finnick Odair for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. And no, it’s not Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer, Robert Pattinson, or any of the actors who were reportedly on the company’s short list. Instead, Lionsgate decided to go in a completely different direction. According to Zap2it, British actor Sam Claflin has landed the role as the trident wielding District 4 tribute.

Whether or not fans agree with the casting choice will have little impact. When it was first announced Jennifer Lawrence would play Katniss Everdeen, a lot a fans felt she wasn’t the right person for job. However, when the first trailer hit, all agreed that Lionsgate had indeed cast the perfect Katniss. Lawrence went on to impress fans with her accurate portrayal of the defensive yet dangerous tribute.

Claflin… Where Have I Seen Him?

Claflin’s name has only been attached to the role for several days now. Given that, he must have knocked his screen-test out the park. Many first got a glimpse of him in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as Philip. He then reappeared on the silver screen as Snow White’s childhood lover, Prince William in Snow White and the Huntsman. I think it’s a good choice Lionsgate went with Claflin, people know him when they see him, but his name alone doesn’t pull attention away from Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth. You can bet that after that first photo of him as Finnick, everyone will know exactly who he is.

Claflin has a lot going for him; he’s just been cast opposite Karl Urban and Emilia Clarke in Pierre Morel’s (Taken) car-heist action flick, Overdrive. The story follows two brothers who steal cars for a living. The thieves decide to add a bit more excitement to their lives as they flee to South France, where they get involved with the wrong people.
