Creating Another Knock-Out Character
As one of the best and most famous actors to date, Brad Pitt has brilliantly portrayed characters for audiences to enjoy since before the early 90s. From one of my personal all time favorite films Fight Club to Snatch and Inglorious Bastards, the man is a complete movie genius. When his name is featured on the silver screen, chances are the film will be a success.
Those who attended this year’s Cannes Film Festival gave the Pitt-produced film positive reviews. The performance by the film’s three stars are already creating an early pre-award season buzz. Fortunately for audiences all around, Pitt’s good looks and smooth talking demeanor will hit theaters September 21, 2012, hoping again to create another successful piece in his great career.
Killing Them Softly
Based on the novel by George V. Higgins, Killing Them Softly tells the story of Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game. Although a trailer has yet to be released for the film, The Weinstein Company did release brief footage of one scene giving insight to what’s in store. In the scene Ray Liotta, who is known best for his portrayal of Henry Hill in the brilliant Goodfellas, gets a pane full of glass to the face for evidently messing with the wrong individual. With the movie seeming to show high emphasis on mob affiliations, Liotta seems to be a well-chosen candidate, and with the addition of Pitt’s signature touch, Killing Them Softly is showing some promise.
Make Room for James Gandolfini
With Brad Pitt co-starring with Ray Liotta, another promising addition to the cast is one who is no novice to the mobster world — James Gandolfini. Best known for his role as Tony Soprano in the massively successful show series The Sopranos, Gandolfini won thirteen awards for his performance as the incredible mobster over the years; he is absolutely an ideal candidate for this film. Here’s what Dan Mecca from Moviefone had to say about the stellar performances.
“Pitt is a joy to watch here, taking his time with the character, waiting for the right moment to strike. This is Chili Palmer without the optimism, a criminal not tired of crime but rather the hypocrisy it’s surrounded by. Jenkins matches him with a someone entirely engrained in that hypocrisy, a representation of the worst villain in the room: the bureaucrat. And finally, James Gandolfini shines in a supporting role as the victim of that system, though he be monumentally unlikeable. Then again, likeable isn’t an adjective this film cares about.”
With a great cast behind him, director Andrew Dominik could deliver a stellar film. Although his resume doesn’t boast a plethora of experience as a director, Dominik’s first and only two films have garnered critical success. His work in Chopper (2000) and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which starred Brad Pitt as the infamous outlaw, showcases the talented neophyte’s strong potential to make another great film with Killing Them Softly. Projected to release on September 21, 2012 be sure to keep watch for more news on this film.
