Glee Without the Instruments!
It was only a matter of time before Hollywood would squint their greedy little eyes in search for the newest fad — films about a cappella groups and show choirs. Get your spirit fingers ready! Glittered vest and character shoes on! One and two and three… OK the trailer for Pitch Perfect isn’t all that cheesy. To be honest it’s mashup of Glee, Bring It On with a hint of Save the Last Dance. All great shows and movies, depending on who you ask, but together… not so sure it’ll mix into the desired concoction director Jason Moore and 30 Rock writer Kay Cannon were going for. Intriguing? Yes, it is. I will say this.. the first trailer has got people talking. And that’s all you need, a little talk.
What’s This All About?
The film is an adaptation of author Mickey Rapkin’s novel, Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory. Those who have read the novel seem to adore it; the book has received several great reviews. No judging a book by its cover… or its title for that matter.
Pitch Perfect tells the story of Beca,a young woman who loves her music. Entering college for the first time can be stressful for any newcomer, especially when you’ve got the lead-singer of the school’s woman a cappella group hounding you. The group? A mix of the mean, the cliche, the beautiful, the popular and the truly unique. Anyone who can hold a tune acoustically and riff is welcome. There’s just one problem… the group is stuck in the past, singing songs from the ’60s & ’70s. Beca joins this melody busting group, bringing them up-to-date on all the new styles and songs as they fight their way to the top of collegiate a cappella groups. It’s battle time, baby!
Anna Kendrick Can Sing… and Rap!?!
I‘m a fan of Anna Kendrick; she’s cute, personable, and has amazing chemistry on screen. The last film I saw her in was 50/50 and boy, did she hold her ground. I’ve almost completely forgot she plays Bella’s best friend in the Twilight franchise…. In Pitch Perfect she gives us everything she’s got. Singing and rapping her way to the hottest tracks in music. Who knew? Zooey Deschanel watch out!
Brittany Snow, Christopher Mintz-Plasse & Rebel Wilson
The film also stars some very familiar faces — Brittany Snow, who starred in Hairspray (2007) as the evil Amber Von Tussle and Christopher Mintz-Plasse who’s known best for his comedic roles in Kick-Ass and Superbad. And you’ll probably recognize the talented actress who plays Fat Amy, Rebel Wilson. Wilson played one of the awkward and creepy roommates in Bridesmaids. This could either be the new Mean Girls or it could crash, burn and find its way in the $5 bin at Wal-mart. Let’s hope it’s a hit. Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts.
Directed by Jason Moore Pitch Perfect stars Anna Kendrick, Alexis Knapp, Brittany Snow, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine & Anna Kamp. This film hits theaters October 5th, 2012.
