Paramount Pushes Jeremy Renner’s ‘Hansel & Gretel’ to Next Year

Oops!? Well… we can’t say we didn’t see this one coming. With only two more months before its previous UK release date, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia, Quantum Solace, Clash of the Titans) and Famke Janssen (X-men, Taken, Golden Eye) had no teaser trailer, no feature trailer, no posters and only a couple of pictures to prove that the film actually went into production.

In a smart move, Paramount Pictures pushed Hansel and Gretel’s release date back all most an entire year. Generally speaking, this is a sign that something or someone dropped the ball along the way in the production phase, it could also be a result of poor budgeting or poor planning in the pre-production phase, but like Beyonce said at one of her concerts after the lights failed to turn-on in one of her songs: “Someone’s getting fired!”

Paramount changed the release date of the popular children’s fantasy tale from March 2nd, 2012 to January 11, 2013. Here’s what a Paramount exec had to say about the date change:

“This should really set up the international… Jeremy Renner’s international profile should be in great shape after being in Mission: Impossible 4 now, then The Avengers in May, then The Bourne Legacy in August. As this past weekend shows, January is great play time internationally, and we haven’t done too bad domestically in January, either.”

Paramount could very well be honing in on Jeremy Renner’s level of international recognition. If that’s the case, then it’s a smart move on their part, but lets get real for a second, there are some problems with the film that Paramount wants to get fixed. By the time Hansel and Gretel is released, Renner would’ve been in several box office hits: The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy. While I’ve never considered Renner a household name with the abilities to draw in audiences worldwide, the actor deserves the recognition and the roles. Can’t wait to see what Renner has in store for us this year.
