With the poster released a couple days ago and now the first trailer debuting for Walt Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful today, it’s shaping up to be a pretty good week for Oz fans.

A Thrill of a Trailer

The first trailer for the Wizard of Oz prequel was shown at Comic-Con and was met with great and powerful reactions (see what I did there). You can check it out for yourself thanks to Apple.

‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ Movie Trailer

Oz: The Great and Powerful imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

I have to say, I really, really love this trailer. Starting the movie off in black and white is a great choice on director Sam Raimi’s part, and a fantastic way to pay homage to the original classic. I also like the tribute to Frank L. Baum (the circus is The Baum Bros. Circus), and James Franco’s line, “Am I dreaming?” (an allusion to the fact that Dorothy’s trip to Oz was a dream). Even though Franco wasn’t my first choice to play the iconic Wizard, it looks like he’ll be taking on the role just fine.

But Wait! There’s More!

To go along with the trailer, we also have this behind-the-curtain look at the film, courtesy of Entertainment Tonight:

Disney returns us to Oz on March 8th, 2013.

As a big fan of the original Wizard of Oz, I am cautiously optimistic. I am not a huge fan of James Franco but  the casting of the 3 witches seems fitting. Since I do  enjoy everything Oz, I can’t wait to see this film and decide for myself if it is worthy to carry the name.

I agree with you, Donna. Since ‘Wizard of Oz’ is such an iconic movie, ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ will have a lot of fan’s expectations to live up to. But since it’s a prequel, that gives the actors a chance to make the characters their own without having to copy the performances of the original actors. Hopefully the film won’t disappoint!

I wish they’d make movies of some other Oz adventures.  I’ve only read
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but know that there’s like a dozen others.
Maybe this movie will pave the way for more Ozian adventures.

It was actually just recently announced that Stephen Daldry (‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’) is going to be directing a movie version of ‘Wicked’. Whether it’s going to be based off the book by Gregory Maguire or the musical is anyone’s guess right now. If its based off the book and is a success, I think the studios would turn his other Oz books into movies (‘Son of a Witch’, ‘A Lion Among Men’, and ‘Out of Oz’).
