Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal

Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, the two brilliant minds behind the complex and re-imagined sci-fi mythology TRON: Legacy, have teamed up once again, this time bringing audiences worldwide a tale of love and the battle between reality and dreams. The first trailer for The Words hit the net yesterday. And across the board people seem to agree, its complex yet fresh storyline is certainly worth the ticket price.

Stepping out of the sci-fi genre and into a bit of drama, the writing duo committed all efforts into their new project, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival to somewhat mixed reviews. Not only did the two pen the script, but they also directed it.

The Storyline

The Words tells the story of struggling writer Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), who must deal with all the stress and worries of going unnoticed and unpublished, that is until he discovers something that will change his life forever. Rory discovers another author’s manuscript left behind, penned many years ago, for which Rory takes full credit for and eventually publishes a book, achieving the international fame he had dreamed of. However, Rory’s conscience begins to get the best of him and he must decide to hide the truth or to reveal to the world that he’s a scam.

One Talent-packed Cast

The cast is slammed packed with star power and recognizable faces: Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, Dennis Quaid, Jeremy Irons and J.K. Simmons. British sensation, Ben Barnes (Chronicle of Narnia: Prince Caspian), French actress Nora Arnezeder and TV star John Hannah (Spartacus: Blood and Sand) lead the supporting cast. With the names mentioned above, there’s one reason to be slightly interested.

3 Relationships + Flashbacks = ?

The trailer and the film stands firmly on Bradley Cooper’s relationship with Saldana’s character juxtaposed  against flashbacks of Barnes’ similar struggles to achieve acknowledgement as a writer and his relationship with Arnezeder; not to mention Quaid and Wilde’s romantic plot line is  also thrown into the mix.

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t leave everyone with a clear understanding of exactly what’s going on. Those who saw the film in at Sundance this year complained of a muddy and complex plot line. You know, I’d rather have a somewhat muddled yet fresh story told by two of Hollywood’s rising screenwriters, than have to spend money on another sequel, prequel or/and unoriginal story. I’ll take my chances with The Words. Will you?

Directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal The Words hits theaters September 21st, 2012.
