‘Magic Mike’, ’50 Shades of Grey’, ‘About Cherry’… Is Sex the New Wave of Cinema?
Like it or not, sex is becoming less taboo in the cinema. (Well — sex on screen anyway. I’m pretty sure sex in the audience is still frowned upon.) The lovely Magic Mike recently hit theaters (check out our review here) and everyone’s talking about the bestseller soon-to-be movie Fifty Shades of Grey. The latest is About Cherry, which premiered at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival and will hit select theaters September 21st. The film tells the story of 18-year-old Angelina who’s stumbling into the adult movie business.
The Story
It’s hard to tell from the trailer what direction About Cherry helmer Stephen Elliot will take the plot. Is our main character in over her head in an ugly business or is she doing what’s right for herself instead of doing what her friends and family think is right? At any rate, Angelina (stage name Cherry, played by Ashley Hinshaw) seems too innocent for her own good. She describes sketchy, much-older Frances (James Franco), who she meets at a strip club, as “the nicest guy.” So, regardless of the morality of the porn business, we’ll definitely get to see her playing with fire.
Her fellow actors in the adult industry seem pretty chill. When I caught wind of About Cherry‘s plot I expected back-stage jealousy and cut-throat competition, but it looks like she’s landed herself a job with a really fun and supportive workplace. They tease her, compliment her, try and make her comfortable — compared to that, her worried best friend and mother seem to be overreacting. Though there definitely is trouble afoot — it’s unclear how she got the forehead gash in the trailer but, be it something to do with “the nicest guy” or her work, it’s clear Angelina isn’t in the safest position.
About Cherry definitely has potential, I just hope they go somewhere original with the plot. It’d be easy to do the good girl trapped in bad situation scenario, but I think moral ambiguity would be more interesting.
The film is co-written by former adult film star Lorelei Lee, who’ll be able to bring the inside scoop of all the internal and external battles of the business. Starring Ashley Hinshaw, James Franco, Heather Graham, Dev Patel and Lili Taylor, About Cherry slams into theaters September, 21st.
