‘Leprechaun’ Gets a Reboot: It’s a St. Patrick’s Day Miracle!

On the eve of the joyous occasion known as St. Patrick’s Day we are blessed with the news that we will soon see a another Leprechaun movie, featuring the little man mauling unsuspecting victims. If you’re a fan of B horror movies than I’m sure you will join me in tipping a glass of Guiness to everyone involved with this film. Lionsgate (responsible for awesome movies such as American Psycho, Saw, and Hostel among many others) and WWE Studios are coming together to bring us lucky fans the film. I’m hoping that in their capable hands the wee little man will find his way to the same cult status that the original movie now enjoys.

If you haven’t heard of the original Leprechaun, then you are certainly missing out on some crappy horror movie gold. You probably have heard of the lead actress featured in the movie, a young Jennifer Aniston. That’s right, the rom-com and sitcom queen started out like a lot of young actors, screaming and running away from a terrible monster bent on the destruction of teenagers. Unfortunately in her case it wasn’t a knife-wielding Jason or Freddy Kreuger that was chasing her, but a little leprechaun. A green suited, top hat wearing, buckled shoes clicking leprechaun that says things like “try as they will, and try as they might, who steals me gold won’t live through the night”.

Cheesy rhymes aside, the Leprechaun is actually played by the amazing Warwick Davis. He’s been in such awe-inspring movies such as Star Wars, Willow, Harry Potter, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Leprachaun: Back 2 tha Hood. That’s right, one of the straight to video sequels of the prolific franchise is set in “tha Hood”. Talk about a great place to run away from a killer leprechaun. Of the 5 sequels spawed from the original 1993 film, there’s also one “in space”. I’m sure you’re getting the picture here: that this a movie that deserves a re-boot.

I’m hoping that both Warwick Davis and Jennifer Anniston will have a place in the new film, even if it’s just a cameo. I doubt the former Ms. Brad Pitt ever wants to think about this movie again (and who can really blame her), but I’m sure Warwick Davis is cool enough to appreciate a good B-movie when he sees one. Hopefully the new reboot will embrace the ridiculous nature of movie and not try to make it into a serious flop like most of the recent remakes such as Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. So while enjoying a pint and listening to U2, you might want to check out the original movie (which will be on during the Syfy marathon tomorrow). It will certainly make for a Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Anyone else as excited by the new Leprechaun film as I am? Or do you think it is a terrible idea?
