Kick-Ass 2 went into production September 7th, 2012. Since then things have been moving along smoothly. Not to mention, director Jeff Wadlow finally found his Mother Russia — a role that couldn’t be filled by your average Hollywood actress. Can things get any better for the unlikely band of heroes?
Russian bodybuilder Olga Kurkulina has been cast as Red Mist’s powerhouse bodyguard Mother Russia. Several days ago, Wadlow tweeted the first image of Kurkulina standing firm and tall as Christopher Mintz-Plasse cowered in his chair with a script in his lap. Check it out below:

In a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, Kurkulina commented on the casting process. According to her, it was no easy process:
“I competed against other candidates from America, Switzerland and Holland. I spent three weeks in the casting, which took place at Pinewood studios. At the end, the director told me that I was getting a role. This was a difficult time psychologically and physically.”
Mother Russia’s New & Improved Costume
It’s up in the air whether or not Mother Russia plays for the bad guys or has an agenda of her own. Either way, we’re excited to see what Wadlow does with the character.
Taking a look at the the next photo, which was released today, you can clearly see Wadlow has few tricks up his sleeve. He will keep in fashion with the vibrant color scheme set by Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn, but has approved a costume design that strays away from the comics’ design for Mother Russia.
Instead of her black tank and dreadlocks she’ll sport platinum-blonde hair, a red two-piece outfit with knee-high boots, and her classic eyepatch. There’s no mistaking it, by color association Mother Russia is definitely an ally of Red Mist. Honestly, I think the red was a smart move. Color plays an important role in the visual aesthetics of Kick-Ass, and having her in black would’ve done nothing for the character. And will you take a look at those abs!? Count them. There are six and quite possibly eight. You definitely won’t want to mess with Mother Russia!
To those of you who are Kick-Ass fans and have a Twitter, you’ll want to follow Jeff Wadlow — @JeffWadlow. He’s been tweeting everyday since the start of production, and each tweet comes with a photo from the set.
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, Kick-Ass 2 stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Lyndsy Fonseca, John Leguizamo, Morris Chestnut, and Donald Faison. And rumor has it Jim Carrey has joined the cast! This film hits theaters June 28th, 2013.
