‘Jane Got A Gun’ and Grabbed Natalie Portman

Mnah, mnah, mmmnah… mnah, mnah, mnaaaaah. Janie’s got a gun. Oh wait… it turns out this movie has nothing to do with Aerosmith. Bummer.

Even without the help of Steven Tyler, Jane Got a Gun looks like it could be a good movie. It’s going to be directed by Lynne Ramsey, the woman responsible for the critically acclaimed We Need to Talk About Kevin. The script was written in 2011 by Brian Duffield, and was promptly put on a Black List for the year’s best unproduced screenplays. But now the film is being shopped around the Cannes Film Festival, sparking a bidding war. Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta, Star Wars 1-3, Black Swan, more awesome stuff) has just signed on to star and produce.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Jane Got a Gun centers on a woman whose outlaw husband returns home riddled with bullet wounds and barely alive. When her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job, she is forced to reach out to an ex-lover and ask if he will help defend her farm.” It certainly sounds like it will be an awesome shoot-em up kind of movie. My family is not really a fan of Westerns, except for one – Silverado. I have watched that movie a hundred times with my Dad. I don’t know where that ranks with true fans of the genre, but it’s a pretty awesome movie to me. I suppose a modern Western will be vastly different from the typical John Wayne stereotype that most people picture when they hear the word “western.” My guess is that this is going to be a film that everyone can enjoy (so that profits will be enjoyable too).

There is one thing that strikes me as odd about the description. In my mind, a Western that is centered on a woman would feature Natalie Portman with guns blazing killing a bunch of bad guys. But the impression you get from the brief quote is that Portman’s character has to turn to a man (her ex-lover?) in order to save her husband. Why can’t Jane get a gun and take care of it herself? Is it because she’s in a Western that she has to turn to a cowboy? I mean, the movie is called Jane Got a Gun, not Jane ran to get her ex-boyfriend to take care of her problems. Maybe I’m reading too much into the short quote. I’m sure more information will become available – and hopefully that information will include the fact that Natalie Portman kicks ass.

What do you think about Jane Got a Gun? Are you excited to see it or are you bummed that it doesn’t seem to include a guitar solo?

Just for fun…
