Nine months… yes, Paramount has decided to push back the release date for G.I. Joe: Retaliation from June 29th, 2012 to March 29th, 2013 — an entire nine months. The later date would allow the studio to convert the entire film to 3D… you know since everyone is raving about 3D now a days. “It is increasingly evident that 3D resonates with movie-goers globally and together with Paramount, we made the decision to bring fans an even more immersive entertainment experience,” said Hasboro President and CEO, Brian Goldner.
Is the 3D Conversion Just an Excuse?
Let’s take a second to get into the minds of the people at Paramount. After all the promotion, all the toys, TV spots and trailers, a month before the film hits theaters lets push back the film! What!? And do you know what you can do in 9 months time? Shoot another G.I. Joe sequel. The whole converting the film into 3D bit seems like a copout for what’s really going on behind the scenes. Either G.I. Joe: Retaliation just isn’t ready, so they need to re-shoot, or Paramount doesn’t want to suffer the same fate as Battleship — a big budgeted film stuffed in between the big hitters of the summer. The later reason for the date change is understandable. But lets get real, Battleship had a lot more going on that made that ship sink.
From One Busy Summer to the Next
Instead of premiering a couple days in front of The Amazing Spider-Man, the film now has to compete with Stephanie Meyer’s book-to-film adaptation, The Host. Other films being released that summer include, Oz: The Great and the Powerful, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Carrie, Iron Man 3, Star Trek 2, The Hang Over 3, Fast and Furious 6, Superman: Man of Steel, The Wolverine, World War Z, Jurassic Park 3D, Despicable Me 2 & Monsters University. Are you really doing the film any good by backing it up even further?
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was a fun ride when it theaters several years ago, a little rough around the edges, but there was no where for Retaliation to go but up. The action looked fresh, the plot line had an interesting hook and Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis and Adrianne Palicki were all added to the cast. Now we have to wait nine months for this film to hit theaters. There are just somethings I will never understand. We want to know how do you feel about the date change? I’ll leave you all with something to chew over.
