Those of you who placed a bet on Prometheus coming in #1 at the box office this past weekend, well unfortunately, it’s time to pay up and accept defeat. If anyone would’ve told me several months ago that the third film in the Madagascar franchise was going to trump Prometheus during its opening weekend, I would’ve laughed in their face, and I’m sure a lot of people would have done the same. The two films battled it out and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted came out on top by just $10 million. Maybe next time Ridley Scott, maybe next time.
1. ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’
The wild animals from New York showed they had the ability to land the top spot at the box office and they did so with style. Children and fans of the first two films came out and supported their favorite band of misfits. Madagascar 3 raked in an impressive $60.3 million in its opening weekend. That’s only $2.8 million short of Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa. In all reality, animated films have always done well at the box office. In fact, the last animated film to hit theaters was The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and that was two months ago. Now that kids everywhere are out of school, they’ve been biting at their parent’s heels for a chance to go to the theaters. Madagascar 3 just happened to be the first family friendly film available. Smart planning by Dreamworks. It’ll be interesting to see where this film lands next weekend.

2. ‘Prometheus’
10 million! Just 10 million! Nonetheless, the Ridley Scott sci-fi still had a solid opening. Prometheus grossed $51 million this past weekend, and had the 10th best opening for an R-rated flick. The film also had the best opening in the Alien franchise. Not to shabby at all. Prometheus had a budget of an estimated $130 million. Ridley Scott should teach a class on how to use a budget effectively. The fact that Disney gave John Carter a $200 million plus budget and they pissed that away makes no sense at all. Prometheus had amazing promotion, stunning visuals and beautiful establishing shots with just a budget of $130 million!
There’s no telling how much this film will gross when it’s all over and done with. Next weekend Prometheus will go up against Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy. It could either stay at the #2 spot or slip several spots. My guess is Madagascar 3 will fend off the competition till Pixar’s Brave hits theaters.

3. ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’
This re-imagined fairytale starring Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth took a hard fall to the #3 spot. We all figured it would land at #3, but not $30 million behind Prometheus. Snow White and the Huntsman was down 59% from its opening weekend and grossed $23 million. The film now has a 10-day domestic total of $104 million. And did you hear!? Universal plans to release a sequel! Not sure why. What a waste of money.

4. ‘Men in Black 3′
Men in Black 3 grossed $13.8 million this past weekend for a domestic total of $139.4 to date. Pretty impressive for its 17th day in theaters. On the 17th day, Men in Black 2 grossed $148 million, and with the number of highly anticipated films hitting theaters this summer, MIB 3‘s legs will be stunted, along with several other films. With that being said, MIB 3 has surpassed MIB 2‘s worldwide total. MIB 3 has grossed $504 million worldwide so far topping MIB 2‘s worldwide gross of $441 million.

5. ‘The Avengers’
Marvel and Disney’s masterpiece, The Avengers grossed $10.8 million this past weekend. To date the film grossed $575 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide. Our favorite team of superheroes won’t reach $600 million fast enough to take the title away from James Cameron’s Avatar, but we’ll all celebrate when it does cross the $600 million mark. Hopefully giving the film some much needed distance before The Dark Knight Rises tries to knock it down a spot.
