For a while, there have been rumors floating around that Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld has been looking for a superhero movie to direct for Warner Bros. Now it looks like he has found a movie in DC Comics’ 1960s series, The Metal Men.
The Metal Who?
For those of you not familiar with The Metal Men, here’s a quick rundown:
Scientist Dr. William “Will” Magnus created six advanced, artificially intelligent robots made of six different metallic elements. The six robots were field leader Gold, strong man Iron, slow-witted and loyal Lead, hot-headed Mercury, self-doubting and insecure Tin, and Platinum (also called “Tina”), who believed she was a real woman and was in love with her creator. The group’s personalities mirrored their namesake metals. Each Metal Man also possessed abilities that reflected the traits of their namesake metal: Gold could stretch his form almost infinitely, Iron was super strong, Lead could block harmful radiation by morphing into thick shields, Mercury could melt and pass through small spaces before reforming and Platinum could stretch or flatten.
DC creating their own movie universe?
Could it be that since The Avengers kicked ass at the box office this summer, Hollywood is looking to adapt more superhero ensembles? There are talks of a Justice League movie in the works, and now with The Metal Men being announced, it looks like DC is trying to build up their own movie universe. Whether it would be a shared movie universe like Marvel has, or one where each movie stands alone is unclear.
DC also looks to be trying to portray their superheroes as realistic as possible (Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise and Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel), so it will be interesting to see how realistic six morphing robots can be made out to be. If that’s the case, is Sonnenfeld really the man for the job? The director of Men in Black also brought us RV and Wild Wild West.
