Ben Affleck Will Not Direct ‘The Justice League’
Several weeks ago it was rumored that actor-turned-director Ben Affleck could possibly jump on board to direct the next big superhero ensemble film, The Justice League, after submitting a script to Warner Bros. However, Ben Affleck says he has no interest in directing the film. Not to worry, the studio has a short list put together. At this point the director’s chair for The Justice League could have anyone’s name on it.
As far as the short list, we all know by now that Warner Bros. would love to see Christopher Nolan behind the film; however, the man responsible for one of the best superhero franchises in recent history has already stated he has no plans to direct another superhero film. In short, The Dark Knight Rises franchise was enough for him.
Warner Bros. Heads to The Wachowskis
According to Moviehole The Wachowskis are next on the studio’s short list; however, the odds that they’d take the director’s chair is slim. Best known for their work in The Matrix, The Wachowskis would be a great choice for the project; they have the ability to execute and effectively communicate complex narratives and worlds to movie goers.
If their latest effort, Cloud Atlas, isn’t a sign of the siblings’ fear-not-attitude, I’m not sure what is. I’m currently reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, and boy, is it an epic. The plot combines six different narratives in one story, each told in a different era and setting. It’s a perfect scenario as The Justice League will need a director who can weave the story lines of some of the biggest superheroes. Cloud Atlas will make its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in a couple weeks and is due for a US release in October. It’s been reported that Warner Bros. is impressed with Cloud Atlas. If the siblings accept the offer from the studio it’ll be their first franchise since The Matrix.
So why should The Wachowskis turn down the offer? Well, lets just say the siblings aren’t ones to follow the wants and needs of the studio. They love doing things their way and it’s worked for them in the past. They have a unique and signature vision and should be given the chance to explore their ideas. However, you can bet Warner Bros. has no plans to give the director much creative control over the characters. This could present a problem, not only with The Wachowskis but any potential director who comes along. At this point it’s anyone’s game. I was excited when I heard that Ben Affleck could possibly direct the film, but I knew it was a long shot from the beginning. I personally think Warner Bros. should hold off on the film. There’s just a lot of pieces that need to come together.
What Do You Guys Think?
We want to know your opinion on all of this. Who would you like to see in the director’s chair? Is Warner Bros. jumping the gun? Shouldn’t the general audience be introduced to several more solo films? Wonder Woman and Flash in particular. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comment box below.
