Taylor Kitsch, Garrett Hedlund & Armie Hammer Up for Finnick Odair

Robert Pattinson Not In Talks for Finnick Odair

As production nears for Catching Fire the hunt for Finnick Odair closes in. Director Francis Lawrence has his eye on several hopefuls. But before we get to those names, it’s been confirmed that there won’t be any sparkling vampires involved with this franchise. Robert Pattinson caught wind of several rumors stating that he was up for the role. And Saturday the Twilight star sat down with USA Today and put all Catching Fire rumors to rest.

“I woke up this morning and saw all these things about me being cast in The Hunger Games,” Pattinson revealed to USA Today. “I was kind of curious for a second, so I called my agent.”

“My agent was like, ‘No one’s going to offer you that part,’” the Twilight star laughed. “I was like, ‘Thanks for the reassurance!’”

The rumors were likely to have started because of Lawrence working with Pattinson previously in Water for Elephants. That and his connection with Harry Potter and Twilight, many people assumed he would be in talks for Finnick Odair as well. However, as I stated last week, Pattinson being offered Finnick Odair seemed highly unlikely. Although many fans crossover between Twilight and The Hunger Games, collectively many wanted Pattinson far away from the franchise as possible.

Taylor Kitsch

Armie Hammer, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch & Several Unknowns… The Battle is On!

Lionsgate is looking to nail down a Finnick Odair by the end of this week and as stated above have limited their short list down to several actors including Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch, Garrett Hedlund and several unknowns. At this point the role could go to anyone. Casting an unknown as Finnick would avoid any unforeseen ego clashes on set. I’m a fan of directors that cast unknowns, giving the actor his break through role and giving Hollywood a fresh new face. Out of the three named actors, I could see each playing the part of Finnick, the young winner of the 65th Hunger Games who gets thrown back into the arena in the 3rd Quarter Quell (The 75th Hunger Games). Finnick’s weapon of choice? A trident. Talk about badass.

Garrett Hedlund

Armie Hammer seems the least likely of the three to join this franchise; he’s already co-starring in next year’s Disney flick The Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp, and if  the film proves successful, Hammer will be tied down to the franchise. Many people first caught wind of Garrett Hedlund when he played Sam Flynn in TRON: Legacy, and his performance as Dean Moriarty in On the Road, starring Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst, received rave reviews from the critics. He would be my first choice if I were casting this film, but Hollywood’s been known to do some crazy things for the sake of an extra buck. And then there’s Taylor Kitsch. I haven’t fully come around to this guy yet. I’m just not exactly sure what to make of him. His performance as Gambit in X-men Origins: Wolverine wasn’t anything spectacular, and he’s the lead actor in two of 2012′s biggest flops, John Carter and Battleship. Do we want this guy around The Hunger Games franchise?

What do you guys think? Should Francis Lawrence give the role of Finnick Odiar to Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch or Garret Hedlund? Or should he be played by someone else? Post your thoughts in the comment box below.
