‘Battleship’ Movie Trailer #2 – Grade Bad-Ass

Today, Universal released the second full length trailer for their highly questionable and highly anticipated alien-invasion film, Battleship. Directed by Peter Berg (Hancock) the film stars several heavy hitters: Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, and new-comer (in her own regards) Rihanna.

Battleship has proven that it can very well gain the attention of many, without necessarily playing by the rules. The film, which takes creative liberties with the popular Hasbro naval combat game, tells the story of a battle between humans and aliens, that isn’t just limited to the ocean, although that’s where the battle begins, but also extends to land and air.

Hasbro, the same company that helped put Transformers to the screen, seems to understand the Hollywood formula: make things go “boom” and you’ve got yourself a #1 box office hit. And just like Transformers, we’re seeing an alien invasion, involvement of the military, and even some eerily similar robotic mechanics.

While there’s not doubt Universal and Hasbro are using the Transformers’ name to wield them into the billions, I’m hoping this film has the ability to stand outside of the Transformers’ shadow. While the films were visually outstanding, the story suffered. We may have to wait for a third trailer before we get any sign of character development. Battleship slams into theaters May 18th, 2012.
