Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jude Law, Channing Tatum… these are the names that surround the Steven Soderbergh directed film, Side Effects. Some how, many have come to believe that the film is Soderbergh’s next to last film as rumors swarm around the director’s retirement. While there’s nothing to confirm or deny the rumors, let’s hope that the Oceans 13 & Magic Mike helmer continues bringing his vision to the big screen because the new Side Effects trailer looks devilishly intriguing.

Soderbergh & screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, who teamed up with the director in Contagion, reunite to bring you Side Effects. The two co-wrote the dark drama which tells the story of a successful New York couple, played by Tatum and Mara. However, when you’re high on life you can expect a couple of lows. When Mara’s character is prescribed a new drug by her psychiatrist (Law) for anxiety, their worlds turn inside out. Will the couple be able to take control of their marriage before the drugs ruin it all?

Judging by the trailer, Side Effects appears to blur the line between reality and illusions brought on by the new prescription. It’s difficult to determine the characters’ relationship to one another from the trailer alone, but there could be something more to Law and Mara’s doctor-to-patient relationship. The story takes a look at the full effects and ramifications of prescribing a patient a drug to which no one knows the full side effects; not only can the situation ruin personal relationships, but it can ruin the career of the doctor who prescribe the drug, as seen in Law’s situation.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Rooney Mara, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Side Effects hits theaters on February 8th, 2013.
