A Cannes Film Festival Pro

French film director and screenwriter Jacque Audiard (A Prophet) brings us the film adaptation of Craig Davidson’s short story collection with the same name, Rust and Bone. The film recently premiered in the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, competing in the esteemed Palme d’Or category – an award presented to the director of the best feature film. Although it lost out to another French film, Amour, Rust and Bone made quite an impact with critics and viewers.

Director Audiard isn’t new to the Cannes Film Festival hype, as his 2009 Academy Award Nominated film A Prophet gained similar praise after it’s festival premiere. The prison melodrama, while a work of fiction, gained attention for it’s realistic allusions to societal statements. In 2010, Empire magazine ranked it number 63 in its “The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema” list.

The New Trailer Adds New Light

As Audiard’s next feature film, Rust and Bone will keep the momentum going. Featuring actor Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead) and actress Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), the new UK trailer for the film leaves the plot a big vague. Rust and Bone will tell the story of the unemployed, 25 year old, underground fighter Ali (Schoenaerts) as he falls in love with killer whale trainer Stephanie (Cotillard) after she loses her legs.

The first trailer for the film, released several months ago, gave a bit more information to the film but both trailers demonstrate profoundly beautiful cinematography. From the quotes of other critics, to the general consensus at the Cannes Film Festival, Rust and Bone looks like it’s going to be one intense journey. Part of my love for movies stems from my intense distaste for anything involving reading and for that, a subtitled foreign film isn’t exactly my calling. Luckily for the rest of the world, UK audiences can catch the flick on Novemeber 2nd but America will have to wait until November 16th.
