‘Sightseers’ Trailer: A British Dark Comedy Not for the Weak-Stomached

Directed by Ben Wheatley, Sightseers gives an inside look at one psychologically unstable couple. The film was written by its stars, Alice Lowe and Steve Oram, which hopefully means they’re characters Tina and Chris are eerily realistic. And from the looks of the trailer, that might be the case.

Not Your Average Road Trip

The trailer shows the young couple, and their dog Poppy, heading off for a roadtrip in which fully ginger-bearded Chris will show Tina “his world.” The pair stop at several landmarks and museums in the English countryside, including the Crich Tramway Museum, the Ribblehead Viaduct, and the Keswick Pencil Musuem. But things quickly take a turn as Chris and Tina murder fellow travelers who interfere with their plans.

Keep in mind that Sightseers is a British comedy — a type of comedy often misunderstood by non-Brit’s. While I personally think the dark comedy is a dynamic category of film, finding humor in murder might be a stretch for more conservative movie goers.

Who’s That Director?

The film was selected to be screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight category, an independent section held in parallel to the festival. You may recognize director Ben Wheatley for writing and directing 2011 British horror film, Kill List, which premiered at 2011′s SXSW Film Festival. Wheatley gained notice for his abilities to deliver a shockingly disturbing yet visually beautiful film. The 2011 British Independent Film Festival nominated Kill List for several awards, including ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Screenplay,’ which will hopefully be apparent in Sightseers.

What to Expect

As a fan of all things politically incorrect, Sightseers bears promise as another shocker for Wheatley. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of characters the writers created. And just what drives the docile couple to participate in such gory hobbies? Dark Comedy is an intriguing genre from the get-go. It’s sometimes offensive but definitely helps us all realize life can’t be taken too seriously. Sightseers come across as an unconventional look at a seemingly conventional couple, the start to one epic journey.
