In honor of Father’s Day I decided to compile a list of the papas we have grown to know and love over the years. Whether it’s because of their hilarious discipline practices, or if it’s the lengths they will go for their children, we love these men as if they were our own fathers.
5. Damon Macready, ‘Kick-Ass’
Nicolas Cage is truly a “kickass” dad in this flick. Audiences first view him as he shoots his own daughter. Little do we know, they are actually a crime-fighting duo and he was just getting her used to being shot at. Dad makes sure she’s protected by having her wear a bulletproof vest. The relationship between Damon and his daughter, Mindy (Hit-Girl), is amazing. He trained her to be a skilled fighter and to only go after the bad guys. He instills morals and defensive skills in her, and together they work to defeat crime.
4. Chris Gardner, ‘Pursuit of Happiness’
As a father of three in real life, I truly respect Will Smith. In this feel-good film we see just how far one man will go to gain some stability in his son’s life. Portraying the true story of Chris Gardener, Smith takes us on the journey of what it’s like to be homeless with a child. On top of this all, Gardner is still trying to sell his failed investment, and fighting through a six month no-pay training period for a stable well paying job. Showing how good of a father you can be in even the toughest times, Gardner earns the number four spot.
3. Sonny Koufax, ‘Big Daddy’
While not technically the real father in this one, Adam Sandler takes Julian, his best friend’s estranged son, under his wing. Initially Sonny lets the boy eat and dress however he wants; he even lets him pick his own name, Frankenstein. This tough challenge makes the party boy take a step back and reevaluate what he wants out of life. He meets the beautiful Layla and pictures the perfect life with her. Sonny soon realizes he must step up to the plate and start treating Julian like his son. After some hurdles he ends up on top and wins the hearts of everyone.
2. Mac McGuff, ‘Juno’
Delivering hilarious and true life advice we have our second father, Mac McGuff played by J.K. Simmons. He still maintained the respect a dad deserves all while keeping us laughing. He handles the news of his daughter’s unplanned pregnancy astoundingly well, and snaps into action getting her the care she needs. With a looming adoption on the front, and his baby girl having some trouble adapting to her awkward love life, he eases her tensions and gives her some of the best advice I’ve ever heard: “The best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with.”
1. Daniel Hillard, ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’
This dad shows the lengths one will go to for their own kin. Just cause a dude looks like a lady, doesn’t mean he can’t be a good father; in fact, Robin Williams shows that he is the most fitting guardian for his kids. Daniel Hillard and his wife Miranda just can’t make it work, and because he is without employment at the time of trial, he loses custody of his three children. To be a part of his kids’ lives he dresses in drag and becomes their nanny. He ends up learning a lot about his family all while working hard to earn their trust as this new person proves to be difficult. By the end of the film his cover is blown, but he has learned to become the mature parent his kids were in desperate need of.
