Opening This Weekend: “Sanctum” & “The Roommate”

This weekend two movies are opening everywhere—Sanctum and The Roommate—while the other two are opening to a limited release—The Other Woman and Waiting Forever.

Sanctum has been advertised with James Cameron’s name plastered over every poster and commercial possible. Great strategy on the advertising department’s part.  No, he isn’t directing this one, he’s just on board as the executive producer. But who cares, right? James Cameron’s name on anything is sure to bring in some money to the box office. The story of Sanctum is one of discovery and adventure. The film was inspired by the co-writer’s, Andrew Wight, near death experience after leading a diving expedition into a system of underwater caves. After a storm closed off the only entrance the team knew, they were forced to find another way out. If you like exploring the unknown or seeing new worlds uncovered then this film is for you. Judging by the trailer, the film looks like it could be good, but the quality of the cinematography with the bad acting makes it look like a movie meant for television. But I’m willing to give this movie a chance.

Trailer for Sanctum:

The next film, The Roommate, starring Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Danneel Harris, and Alyson Michalka, is a film about what could go wrong when you room with someone you don’t know. OK, it’s a very slim chance that the stranger you end up rooming with is really psycho, but you never know.  College freshmen, Sara, is randomly assigned a roommate named Rebecca. At first they’re friends, but then some important information Rebecca “forgot” to tell Sara begins to surface. The relationship between Sara and Rebecca turns deadly as she threatens her family and friends. I’m probably going to skip this one, depends on how I feel this week. The Roommate looks like a bad mix of Scream, Prom Night, and Orphan.
