Halloween has come early! Ever since it was announced that Iron Man would continue his solo adventures after The Avengers, fanboys and fangirls everywhere have been dying to learn anything they could about Iron Man 3.
For the past couple of days, Marvel has been teasing us with the first poster, a look at The Mandarin, and trailers for the trailer (all of which you can see here). The wait is over! Early this morning Marvel Studios and Disney released the very first trailer for the highly anticipated Iron Man sequel and the first film to launch Marvel’s Phase Two.

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Ho-Lee Smokes!
What an awesome thing to wake up to this morning. The trailer definitely raises a lot of questions, but hey, that’s what a movie trailer is supposed to do. The trailer gives the feeling that the film will be dark and serious, and is trying to steer away from the comedic vibe of the first two in franchise.
It’ll definitely be interesting to see what direction the series takes since switching directors from Jon Favreau to Shane Black. Marvel Executive and Producer Kevin Feige has said in interviews, that we’ll see Tony Stark at his most broken since he was captive in a cave in the opening act of the first Iron Man film, and from the looks of the first trailer, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
“Heroes… There Is No Such Thing”
Let’s take a quick second to talk about Ben Kingsley’s take on the villain, The Mandarin. While you can’t judge an actors performance in a film based solely on the trailer, I will say that I really like what I see. In the Marvel universe, The Mandarin is the son of one of pre-Revolutionary China’s wealthiest men, and also a descendant of Ghengis Khan.
So why is non-Chinese actor Sir Ben Kingsley in the role? Feige explains that “it’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end.” With the hodgepodge of various warrior motifs, no specific ethnicity would be offended by Kingsley’s portrayal of character.
I am super excited for Iron Man 3. Everything in the trailer , from the Pepper-ony romance to the explosions and spectacular effects made getting up early this morning totally worth it. The only down side is we have to wait five more months to see the film in theaters.
Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, and Ben Kingsley. The sure-to-be epic blockbuster flies into theaters May 3rd, 2013.
