This time next month I will be enjoying The Amazing Spider-Man DVD in the privacy of my own home (it comes out on November 9th). While it probably won’t look the same without the 3D glasses, one thing definitely won’t change – the amazing cast. Andrew Garfield did a great job taking over as Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) playing the perfect mix of bad ass and nerd. His chemistry with Emma Stone, who took on the role of love interest Gwen Stacy, makes for some of the best scenes in the movie. And director Marc Webb knew how to balance it all out between awkwardly cute high school romance and Spidey on Lizard beat downs. So far all of these people are returning for the sequel, which means that it’s shaping up to be another amazing movie.
But we can’t just have a repeat of the same thing, no matter how great it was the first time (The Hangover tried it and it failed miserably). There have to be some new characters, especially when you have several years worth of good comics to pull from. Rumor has it that the most recent add to the cast is the villain Electro – a man who gains power over electricity when he’s struck by lightning. Harry Osborn, Peter’s best friend, has also been mentioned in connection with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. If you remember Harry from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man franchise, he was played by James Franco and eventually took after his father as The Green Goblin. So news that Osborn is joining the cast could mean a second bad guy or a friendly face for Spider-Man. While all we have is speculation, especially since we don’t have any actors attached, there are some names being thrown around that may have more weight – such as Mary Jane.
Mary Jane Watson is known by fans of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man franchise as Peter Parker’s one true love. The comics portray her as a fiery red-head who captures Spidey’s heart after the death of his first love, Gwen Stacy. Which is why when Shailene Woodley’s name is being mentioned in connection to Mary Jane, I get a little confused. Apparently Shailene Woodley was amazing in The Descendants, but I’ve never seen it (I tend to stay away from depressing Oscar nominated stuff). The only thing I’ve seen her in is the previews for The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family, which even from those brief glimpses I can tell is the one of the silliest shows on television. Want to know the “secret” life of a teenager? It’s pregnancy. Lots and lots of teenage pregnancy (I know that at least two of the main characters got knocked up). I don’t know about your teen years, especially with 16 and Pregnant being so popular, but my high school life didn’t revolve around baby making. Perhaps I’m being too judgmental of Miss Woodley, considering I’ve never actually watched her acting for any length of time, but when I think of Mary Jane Watson she is not the face I picture.
Besides not thinking that Shailene has the chops to portray Mary Jane (especially when you compare her to Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy), she really doesn’t seem to fit well with Andrew Garfield. Perhaps I’m biased because I really loved the chemistry between him and Emma Stone. But if you look at a picture of Woodley and Garfield side by side, it looks like Spider-Man might be a bit of a pedophile. When you have 29 year old Andrew Garfield playing a high school-er, Shailene Woodley’s 21 years look just too young. If you put in one person who is actually closer to high school age it may end up making the rest of the cast look like crypt keepers. With all that added together, I am praying that this rumor proves to be untrue. Because I don’t want this re-boot to fizzle out anytime soon – it’s just too amazing to let go the way of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
What do you guys think about Shailene Woodley possibly being the new Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Anyone care to defend her acting skills or young looks? Comment below!
