The History Behind Sound City Studios

Sound City Studios has not only helped turn music into masterpieces but it’s also been the beacon of specialized recording and mixing in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, CA since 1969. The legendary sound studio boast many of the famed musical recordings laid down in the early ’70s by artists such as Neil Young, Dr. John, Spirit, Crazy Horse and more.

For the most part, Sound City entrenches itself in the Rock genre. After recording one of the best selling albums of all-time, Fleetwood Mac’s self titled album, the road was paved for other mega-bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Foreigner. Flash forward to the ’90s, and Sound City was helping to record Nirvana’s Nevermind. It’s perhaps this personal interaction that Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl first gained his admiration for the studio.

Sound City has always prided itself on its signature sound when it comes to recording drums. It’s no wonder that epic drummer Grohl would stand behindSound City. Both producing and directing the film, Grohl’s grungy flair shines through in the trailer.

As lead vocalist, guitarist and primary song writer for the ten time Grammy winning, Foo Fighters, it’ll be interesting to see the balance of story telling and music making portrayed in the full length film. Dave Grohl is a musician at heart and in addition to vocals, plays many instruments as well. He’s often known for writing hyper-rhythmic guitar riffs for the Foo Fighters, writing in a similar manner to playing his drumkit.

It’s through his innovation as an artists as well as his political activism that makes Grohl a perfect match for making a film about the importance of music. Dave Grohl continuously pushes the boundaries of musical genres and collaborates with other artists to expand his already overwhelming talent.
