Besides the fact that they’re all film adaptations of some of the best novels of our time, The Hobbit, Les Miserables & Life of Pi share no similarities whatsoever. One takes place in Middle Earth, the other in France, and the last takes place on a lifeboat… in the middle of the Pacific… with a tiger. This week the promotion teams of all three films released a load of character posters for each. Let’s get started!
‘Life of Pi’
In his most ambitious project yet, director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) takes on the story of a lifetime. In Life of Pi, a boy and a tiger are forced to share a lifeboat together as they fight for survival against nature’s most desolate territories — the ocean.
Today MTV released a featurette that centers around Suraj Sharma’s once in a lifetime experience. Sharma landed his first acting role with a director many would love to work with and in a film that’s already received a ton of Oscar buzz months before its releases. I don’t think anything could’ve prepared Sharma for this event in his life:
“Growing up in India, I never thought that when I was watching a movie that I’d actually be in one,” he says. “When I got the role, my mom and dad, they never believed me. Now they’re excited. Now they know it’s really happening.”
Directed by Ang Lee, Life of Pi hits theaters November 21st. Check out one of the three new posters below (all three posters are located in a gallery at the bottom of the page)
In what could be one of the best film adaptation of a musical since Rob Marshall’s 2002 film Chicago, Les Miserables has done quite an amazing job pleasing musical theatre fans worldwide, which, by the way, is not an easy feat. Armed with a pretty stellar promotions team, Les Miserables has taken all the right steps to ensure that Christmas Day and that weekend will be a strong one in terms of box office numbers.
Unfortunately, they took a step in the wrong direction with the latest character poster for Madame and Monsieur Thénardier, played by Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. The two look like they stepped out of a Dr. Seuss inspired Hallmark Christmas card. Not a good look for either character. Fantine (Hathaway) is forced to leave Cosette (Seyfried) with The Thénardiers who mistreat the young girl while she’s in their care.
The second poster features Marius and Cosette in a position showing the couple’s love for one another. Original? Sure. Effective? Not so much. Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried look amazing together, just not in this poster. Is it obvious Redmayne’s head was photoshopped in?
Directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, and Aaron Tveit, Les Misérables hits theaters December 25th, 2012.

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’
Peter Jackson & co. are pushing the promotion for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey into new territory every week. And they’ll continue to do so up until the film’s release date December 14th, 2012. The latest promotion effort comes in the form of 17, yes, 17 different character posters. Of course you need one for all 13 dwarves and one for Galadriel, Gollum, Gandalf, and Bilbo. Did I mention how festive some of them are?
The Hobbit stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Rob Kazinsky, Aidan Turner, Peter Hamleton, and John Callen.
