January Jones on Playing Emma Frost

More news about X-men:First Class was just released today! Let me tell you, I could be the happiest person in the world right now. Fox has been so hush hush about the movie lately, it’s ridiculous. But Los Angeles Times was able to catch up with actress January Jones who will be playing the psychic white queen, Emma Frost. This is what Jones had to say about the role:

“When I heard that this installment of ‘X-Men’ was gonna take place in the ’60s I was like, ‘Oh my God, you must be kidding me! But I read the script and familiarized myself with the character of Emma Frost. She’s so, so far from Betty and from ‘Mad Men,’ and it takes place in that time but it doesn’t feel like a period movie.”

“The costumes are insane. It’s a lot of very body-conscious stuff. If you look at the comic book, she’s barely dressed. She’s got quite the bod, which is very intimidating.”

Emma Frost is quite the character. What I like about her is that she is smart and sexy. But what I’m hoping is that Fox doesn’t only add the character in the movie for sex appeal. I think that’s the problem with most female superhero movies nowadays. Until the studios can find a way to market female superheros better only then will they start to gain more attention at the box office.

“How am I gonna get buff in one day? I’m a petite person, so I didn’t want to go into a strict workout and eating regime. I would have disappeared entirely, and she’s very busty, very voluptuous, so I didn’t want to get rid of any of my curves.”

The actors playing some characters in the previous X-men films have had to go through extensive makeup treatment that’s lasted for at least 10 hours, particularly the blue ones—Beast, Mystique, Night Crawler. Getting the blue paint, fur, and scales on their bodies is a task for both the make up artist and the actors. In fact Alan Cumming, who played Night Crawler in X2: X-men United did not return for the third installment because of the makeup. Jones had this to say about her transformation into the White Queen,”I don’t have to do all the crazy prosthetics… When I morph into my diamond form, it’s all done on computer.” Lucky her.

January Jones even gives us a little background about Emma Frost:

“Emma was a bespectacled, mousy child who had this power when she was young that she couldn’t quite harness, the telepathy, the mind-twisting stuff. She had a falling out with her father and went her own direction.”

Finally, some news. I’m starting to get excited about this film. I think Fox made a smart move in bringing in director Matthew Vaughn and having Bryan Singer (director of X-men and X2: X-men United) produce. Keep your eyes open, we should be getting a trailer very soon. X-men: First Class comes out
