Prepare for a complete nerd meltdown. If you’ve been following the new Alien prequel/completely unrelated movie, Prometheus, as closely as I have then you’re well aware that there has been a noticeable abscence in the trailers. While Guy Pearce has been attatched to the project for some time, we haven’t seen him in any of the material that has been released. That is, until now. A new viral video appeared yesterday featuring Guy Pearce in his role as Peter Weyland. If you’re a huge Alien fan then you know that name - Weyland-Yutani is the name of the corporation featured in the movies. Their slogan? “Building Better Worlds.”
If you know anything about the movies then you realize that “building better worlds” is the last thing on the Weyland-Yutani corporation’s mind. They are responsible for sending the Nostromo (the ship in the first Alien film) down to the planet LV-426 to check out the distress call from an unknown spacecraft that happens to be filled with hostile organisms. Years later they colonize that same planet without telling the 70 or so families that they may or may not be living next to a hostile extraterrestrial in Aliens. You may have guessed that things don’t end well when the Weyland-Yutani gets involved.
Now with Peter Weyland entering the Prometheus story, it means things are going to get messy. Here’s the video of his very compelling speech, explaining the myth of Prometheus and the technological advances that his company is making:
Listening to him talk about “unlimited ambition” and settling “for nothing short of greatness” or he will “die trying” seems to be foreshadowing the bad decisions to come. I think it would be a good time for the 99% to start protesting this big corporation. You may notice that Guy Pearce kind of sounds like John Hurt (who played Kane, the original crew member infected), which is an interesting throw back to Alien. John Hurt has a very deliberate way of talking – just one of the things that makes him so awesome. But maybe Pearce’s choice of accent is another insight into the film. Will Weyland have the first contact with the creatures?
Not only were Alien fans blessed with the video, but Ridley Scott also cleared up a little bit more of the fog surrounding the production. He revealed the connection between the movies, and it isn’t what we were all hoping. It seems that we have to admit once and for all that the original alien will not be making an appearance in the new film. Here’s what Scott said via AVP Galaxy and Bleeding Cool: “The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland… that’s the connection between the two films, and nothing more. Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course, new monsters as well.” At least we can still count on the Space Jockey making an appearance. Even if none of our other alien friends will be attacking us humans.
The date June 8th, 2012 can not come soon enough. The suspense from now until then may well kill us fans. With all the build-up, this movie better turn out to be everything we’re hoping for. With an amazing cast (Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce) and a director that has been delivering awesomeness for years, I’m sure that it will be.
