Emma Watson Joins Band of Thieves in Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Bling Ring’

Director Sofia Coppola

Those of you who are fans of writer-director Sofia Coppola’s work understand her unique cinematic style — it’s simplistic yet still manages to grip viewers’ heart-strings. Yet the daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather and Apocolypse Now) has plans to step into a bit of action and mystery in her next feature film titled The Bling Ring.

Judging from Sofia’s past films, Somewhere (2010) and Lost in Translation (2003), which she won an Academy Award for ‘Best Original Screenplay’, I can tell you Sofia will write her characters with finesse, not much flash. Question is, will the director be able to implement a sense of action and still stay true to her roots?

When it comes to casting Sofia has a knack for young talent. In Lost in Translation she casted a young Scarlett Johansson, in The Virgin Suicides it was Kirsten Dunst, in Somewhere it was Dakota Fanning’s younger sister, Elle, and in The Bling Ring Sofia hand picked Emma Watson. So far Sofia has yet to get her casting wrong, so we’re sure Watson will be hit.

Since the Harry Potter franchise ended last summer with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow’s: Part 2, Watson has been busy busting her ass and showing off what she’s really capable of. Watson, age 21, co-starred in the critically acclaimed film, My Week with Marilyn, and has several projects lined up, which includes The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and David Yates’ Your Voice in My Head (2013).

Sofia hasn’t revealed who Watson will be playing. As the screenwriter and the director, she’s usually hush-hush about the film until she feels ready to release more details. However, we do know that the film is based around true events. The Bling Ring centers around a band of Hollywood obsessed teenagers from So-Cal who burglarized  the homes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan and other celebrities.

If cast as one of the burglars, it’ll be a great role for Watson to sink her acting chops into, especially if she’s trying distance herself from the lingering shadow of Hermione Granger. Could this be the beginning of something great?! We sure hope so! Sofia has yet to set a release date for The Bling Ring.

Do you guys think Emma Watson’s going in the right direction in terms of her career?
