One day after Disney announced that Joss Whedon would return to direct The Avengers 2 (read all about that here) and develop a Marvel television show for ABC, there are reports that Ben Affleck has been approached to direct DC‘s Justice League for Warner Bros. According to Variety, along with directing the film, Affleck may have a chance to play one of the superheroes himself.
Who are the Justice League?
The Justice League is made up of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter. They are an ensemble group of superheroes who, much like Marvel’s Avengers, team up to fight evil. Although the Justice League usually consists of the heroes mentioned above, Warner Bros. is only looking to have Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern in their film, leaving out Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter.
Is Affleck the Right Choice?
So far, Ben Affleck is the only one who has been sent a copy of the Justice League sctipt. But does that mean he is right for the job? Previously directing Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Affleck does have some directing experience under his belt. Don’t get me wrong, I think Affleck is a good director, but I’m wondering if he’s ready to take on the movie that could revive DC’s shared movie universe. And since Affleck usually only directs movies he can star in too, I’m also wondering if there is a place in the Justice League for him. Presumably, Henry Cavill will be reprising his role of Superman for Justice League. Batman, Flash, and Green Lantern are still available, but I honestly can’t see him as a superhero. Sure, he’s come a long way since 2003′s Daredevil, but I think if he took the directing job, he should step out of the limelight and focus all his energy on directing the film.
My Final Thoughts
I think the smart thing to do would be to release the individual superhero films and lead up to the ensemble Justice League film (like Marvel did). That way the audience would already be familiar with the heroes and Affleck (or whoever would be directing) wouldn’t have to spend a lot of time on developing the character’s back stories.
DC’s Justice League will most likely be shooting for a summer 2015 release, which will be rivaling Marvel’s The Avengers 2. Oh, what an epic summer that will be.
